The story behind Daily Kana and why traditional language learning wasn't cutting it.I built this because I've always been able to memorize vocabulary like crazy but completely fall apart when I actually have to talk to someone. I could drill hundreds of words in my head, ace grammar exercises, and understand what people were saying to me, but the moment I had to produce a sentence in real-time, my brain would lock up.
The core problem:
Most self-study learners have overdeveloped passive skills (memorization, reading, listening) and underdeveloped active skills (speaking, writing). When you finally need to use the language in a real conversation, your brain isn't trained to perform under that kind of pressure.
Language exchange apps were awkward and inconsistent. Private tutors were great but expensive and required scheduling. I just wanted consistent, low-pressure practice where I could fail privately and get real feedback on why I was making mistakes. So I built Daily Kana as a tool for myself.
The scenarios are designed around situations that actually stress learners out: formal interactions, small talk with locals, handling unexpected complications. The feedback layer doesn't just flag mistakes. It explains why your phrasing sounded unnatural, shows what a native speaker would say instead, and tracks patterns across conversations so you can actually improve.
The Honest Truth About AI Language Learning
Let's be clear: this isn't magic, and AI isn't perfect. The conversation AI will sometimes generate slightly unnatural phrasing. The feedback AI will occasionally miss errors or over-correct things that are actually fine. This tool won't replace a good human teacher, and it definitely won't replace immersion in a native-speaking environment.
What it will do is give you consistent, affordable practice that targets the specific weakness most self-study learners have: producing language under realistic conditions. Think of it as a sparring partner. It's not the real fight, but it's a hell of a lot better than shadow boxing alone in your room.
Daily Kana started as a personal project and it's still run that way. I'm building this because I needed it, and if it helps other learners bridge the same gap I was stuck in, that's even better. If you have feedback, suggestions, or just want to share your progress, I'm always listening.
